Starbucks' Pumpkin Spice Latte symbolizes the joy of fall

Fall has arrived in the Northern Hemisphere. And Starbucks marks this seasonal moment annually by bringing back the Pumpkin Spice Latte 🎃 .

The PSL, as it’s often referred to, has been a popular item on Starbucks’ menu for nearly two decades sparking joy and excitement among its loyal fan base. Starbucks has sold more than 500 million PSLs since the drink’s introduction in 2003. And recently, Starbucks broadened its pumpkin-related offerings in the form of the Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew.

But what is the story behind the PSL? Well, it almost didn’t exist. In 2003, when seasonal beverages were the trend the R&D session put pumpkin flavors at the bottom. But they decided to pursue it anyway as there was hardly anything pumpkin flavor available in the market. During the piloted launch across 100 stores in Vancouver and Washington D.C in the fall of 2003, they couldn’t keep up with demand. Till today the PSL signals the start of a season 🍁.
